When We Started
Jim was 82 years old and was being evicted from the senior community where he lived. His behavior had recently changed; he had become angry, agitated, loud, and at times violent. Jim applied to an alternative senior community but was rejected, and his family knew no other community would accept him in this condition. We first stabilized Jim's behavior so he could avoid being evicted. Our geriatric psychiatrist reviewed his medications and found some that are not well tolerated, then implemented a revised plan, and the CARE team visited Jim two to three times a week to monitor changes after the adjustments.
Interventions We Performed
- Conducted environmental and social assessments and understood that Jim was struggling to cope with his increasing loss of independence and isolation
- Implemented the CARE Method in collaboration with his senior living community and home care agency
- Made small changes to daily routines and caregiver interactions, synchronized with medication changes, to increase his sense of control and purpose
Outcome
- Jim's anger and violent behavior stopped completely
- He was invited to stay in his senior living community, and was even offered a placement by the community that had previously rejected him
- His family was delighted to see him return to a stable, happy state and could return to their daily lives with peace of mind
